Does AI Understand Your Brand? Here’s How to Find Out Before It Matters

With AI Overviews now part of Google Search — and AI Mode rolling out soon in Australia — now’s the time to make sure AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini accurately understand your business.
Because here’s the thing: when someone searches for your brand using AI-powered search, it’s no longer just about what you say on your website. It’s about what AI believes to be true — and where it’s pulling that data from.
Let’s explore how to test it, what to look for, and how to fix misinformation before it affects your visibility.
Why AI Brand Understanding Matters for SEO & Visibility
AI-powered search is shifting how people discover businesses online.
Whether it’s Google’s AI Mode, Perplexity’s summaries, or ChatGPT’s web results, these tools now act as intermediaries — presenting curated answers about your brand based on what they find online.
This means:
-
If your brand information is incomplete or outdated, it could affect how you’re described
-
If other businesses with similar names exist, your brand could be confused with theirs
-
If competitors are better represented, AI will recommend them first
In short: if AI doesn’t understand your brand properly, your potential customers won’t either.
How to Check What AI Thinks About Your Brand
To see how AI currently understands your business, here’s what to do:
1. Use ChatGPT (Pro plan recommended for “Deep Research” mode)
Type a prompt like:
“Please undertake deep research and explain your understanding of [Your Name] or [Business Name], [your location or industry].”
In my case, I entered:
“Please undertake deep research and explain your understanding of Ashley Bryan, internet strategist in Australia.”
Let the AI run its process — ideally in deep research mode — and see what it finds.
2. Let the AI Guide the Process
You might be prompted with follow-up questions, like:
-
Are there specific companies or websites you’d like included?
-
Should I include social media profiles or a professional biography?
💡 Tip: You can either guide it or say “use your own judgment” to see what the AI finds on its own.
What You’re Looking For
As ChatGPT or Perplexity gathers and displays its sources, look for:
-
Correct name usage
-
Accurate business descriptions
-
Mentions on directories, blogs, social media, and press
-
Outdated profiles, inactive websites, or wrong businesses with the same name
-
Missing or inconsistent brand assets
In my own case, ChatGPT initially pulled data from an unrelated Ashley Bryan (an American author), which was completely incorrect — highlighting the importance of geo-specific brand positioning (e.g. adding “Australia” or your city/region).
How to Fix and Improve Your AI Brand Profile
If the AI produces results that are incorrect, incomplete, or vague:
-
Audit and update your web presence
-
Ensure consistent branding across your website, social media, directories, and articles
-
Add rich information about your business (who you are, what you do, who you help)
-
-
Publish branded content on external websites
-
Submit articles, contribute to industry blogs, or get listed in business directories
-
-
Address outdated sites
-
Retire or redirect old domains or content that could be confusing AI
-
-
Use schema markup
-
Help Google and AI understand key facts through structured data
-
Bonus: Competitive Insights from AI Research
You can also run the same search on your competitors using ChatGPT or Perplexity.
Prompt:
“Please undertake deep research and explain your understanding of [Competitor Name], [Location].”
This can reveal:
-
Where your competitors are being mentioned
-
Which websites reference them
-
Opportunities for link building or content placement in the same places
Final Thoughts
Your brand is no longer just what you say — it’s what AI systems infer from the internet. And in this new search landscape, that brand perception directly affects visibility.
✅ Check what AI says about your business
✅ Identify outdated or incorrect sources
✅ Fill the gaps by publishing accurate, helpful, consistent content
✅ Track how your brand appears and evolves in AI-powered results
You’ve got time before AI Mode fully lands in Australia — but not much. Now’s the perfect time to take control of your digital footprint.
